MSc Haematology and Transfusion Science

Mastering the science of blood – exploring its characteristics and disorders, and understanding how it’s transfused – impacts far beyond the laboratory.

We’ve designed our MSc Haematology and Transfusion Science course to enable you to develop an advanced theoretical understanding and the practical techniques you’ll need to apply those theories in a research or clinical context.

Our course is accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science. This means our expertise is recognised as meeting the high standards of proficiency for biomedical scientists.

You’ll start by developing a well-rounded understanding of biomedical topics, learning about analytical techniques and human disorders. You’ll then look at a range of specialist units – offering an in-depth look at everything from blood cells and diseases of the blood, to blood groups, transfusion methods and immunological aspects of blood. From there, you'll be ready to tackle the issues that fascinate you, with an independent masters research project.

Whether you study full-time for a year or part-time for up to three, our haematology and transfusion science masters can open doors for your future. From furthering your career in a hospital laboratory or working in a research facility, continuing your studies or moving into teaching or management, be ready for a career full of impact.

Our MSc Haematology and Transfusion Science course is based around ten core units. You can study all units within one year if you’re studying full-time, or spread over the course of three years if studying part-time.

You’ll cover eight units based around various aspects of haematology and transfusion science, from analytical techniques and recent advances in Biomedical Science to haemostasis and haematological malignancies. Including two units focussing in-depth on transfusion where you’ll study transfusion and transplantation science in-depth and become better equipped to analyse, evaluate and adapt methods in transfusion science practice, research and development.

We have designed our Research Methods and Ethics in Biomedical Science unit to help you develop advanced skills in research methods. You’ll explore the evidenced-based and ethical frameworks you’ll need to complete your own in-depth, independent research project.

Above all, your research project is your chance to tackle the issues that fascinate you most. With a deep dive into a topic of your choice, your project will help you understand both the process and the communication of scientific enquiry. You’ll be guided through your proposal and review process to equip you with the skills you need to complete an independent piece of research.

As part of our Department of Life Sciences, you’ll have the support of an expert team and access to excellent laboratory facilities spanning microbiology, exercise performance and human physiology, cell and molecular biology, genomics, blood biochemistry, cell culture and biomechanics.
