Want to teach your favorite secondary school subjects to a new generation of New Zealanders? The Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching will give you practical techniques based on sound research to teach your curriculum subject(s) in secondary schools. This is a professional qualification with a strong emphasis on practical experience and applied learning.

Start this program at the AUT North Campus in February or in July, or start your studies at the South Campus in February.

AUT NORTH CAMPUS

Our North Campus is on Auckland’s North Shore and offers facilities including student accommodation, cafes and our biggest sports centre.

AUT SOUTH CAMPUS

Our South Campus is located in the heart of Manukau. You can choose from courses based entirely at the South Campus, or include papers at the City or the North Campus.

Job Opportunity Potential

Student teachers who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching are eligible to seek registration as a teacher and apply for teaching positions in secondary schools.

Your qualification at level 7 or higher is acceptable if your course lasted 30 weeks or more.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Minimum entry requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree in a subject considered relevant for teaching in a New Zealand secondary school. AUT will evaluate whether overseas qualifications meet the above entry requirements. An assessment of your overseas qualification by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) may be required for teacher registration and/or salary assessment purposes
  • Attend a selection interview
  • Must meet the Teaching Council's Good Character and Fit to be a Teacher requirement Applicants are required to make a declaration about any convictions, health and other issues that may affect their fitness to be a teacher.
  • Police vetting
  • Satisfactory references
  • Meet the Teaching Council English language competency requirements
  • Successfully complete the numeracy and literacy assessment
  • Meet the safety check requirements as set out in the Vulnerable Children Act 2014

Teaching subjects

  • All applicants must have a senior (Year 11-13) and a junior (Year 9-10) teaching subject area supported by relevant papers in their degree
  • Applicants must have at least one appropriate 300-level paper in their senior area and one 200-level paper in their junior area
  • In practice applicants need a range of appropriate papers to teach in their subject areas. You are also expected to have good grades. We will work with applicants to identify appropriate teaching subjects.
