English Language BA Honours (Q302)

This degree explores the English language, which has over 330 million native speakers, and 810 million who speak it as a second language. If you want to find out more about how people learn and use English, and how the language has evolved over time, this is the degree for you.

You will examine:

  • how the English language is acquired and develops in the mind
  • social, regional and stylistic distinctions
  • the grammatical structure of English and general phonetics/phonology
  • social and historical contexts in which the English language has changed and developed
  • methodologies for studying the human language faculty

The degree includes a strong element of linguistics (the scientific study of language), drawing on our considerable expertise in this area.
