Journalism (Advanced Diploma)

Humber’s Journalism advanced diploma program is designed to produce dynamic storytellers who are immediately ready to work in a variety of media platforms as reporters, broadcasters, editors, producers, and digital content managers. Our program is also ideal for those looking to go into communications or public relations.

As a journalism student, you’ll be given training in hands-on skills that are at the forefront of what’s happening in the industry today including reporting the news, creating broadcast stories, writing feature articles, capturing high-quality images and creating compelling digital presentations. Our tight deadlines match industry standards. You will work individually and in teams in the classroom and in the field. You will learn from industry experts and media personalities. As well, you will get a solid grounding in media law and ethics.

We are constantly updating our curriculum to reflect the new reality of journalism in the digital age.

The Journalism diploma program features:

  • courses with a focus on digital media, online publishing and developing web content including social media
  • hands-on technical and production training including broadcast equipment, digital prepress, TV production, and multimedia management
  • entrepreneurial skills advice for today’s highly competitive media communications market

Working While Studying

Part-time employment opportunities are available to international students for working both on and off campus. You can work up to 24 hours per week on campus, or up to 20 hours per week off campus, during regular school sessions and work full time during scheduled breaks, such as the winter and summer holidays or reading week.

Working on campus will help you gain valuable work experience, learn about services at Humber and earn extra money. Most positions are relatively flexible to your study schedule.

Working off campus is a great opportunity to gain first-hand experience with a Canadian company and work environment. You must have a valid study permit that states you are eligible to work off campus.

If your program was less than 8 months

  •    You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.

If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.

For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.

If your program was 2 years or more

  •    We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.

If you completed more than 1 program

  •    You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.

Each of the programs you completed -

  • must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent including these required courses:

  • Grade 12 English (ENG4C or ENG4U or equivalent).
  • Grade 12 Mathematics (MAP4C, MCT4C, MDM4U, MCB4U, MGA4U, MCV4U or MHF4U) or Grade 11 M or U Mathematics (MCF3M or MCR3U)
  • Two Grade 11 or Grade 12 C, M or U courses in addition to those listed above
    or
    Mature student status
    or
  • College or university transfer status
  • International Credit Evaluation
    • Canadian citizens or permanent residents with international education are required to provide a credential evaluation. Note, for international High school education course by course evaluations, ICAS must be used. For international post-secondary education, a WES evaluation must be provided. In situations where you expect to apply for transfer credit, it is recommended that a course by course WES evaluation is completed.
