You will be able to position yourself within your field of expertise with authority and conceive, initiate and conduct substantial artistic research projects independently. You will be able to provide leadership and authoritative feedback on other research. You will find employment opportunities in universities and other educational or arts institutions, as well in industry environments.

For admission as a candidate, an applicant will:

• hold a bachelor degree with first-class or second-class honors (Division A) or equivalent qualification from a recognized institution or
• hold a masters degree from a recognized institution or equivalent qualification deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School to be of a standard comparable at least to a bachelor degree with second class honors (Division A) or
• possess a record of research or a qualification granted by a professional or other body, deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School to be of a standard comparable at least to a bachelor degree with second-class honors (Division A)
• have been enrolled in a research Masters degree at the University for not less than one year as a full-time candidate and two years as a part-time candidate and will have had their work as a research Masters candidate certified by the Dean to be of a standard required for candidature in a professional doctorate.

Students admitted to the Doctor of Musical Arts program will normally have at least five years of professional experience.

A portfolio assessment and/or interview will be part of the admission process. If specialist equipment or computer programs are required, this must be stated within the application. In cases where the candidate does not meet all formal criteria, the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School can establish equivalence on the basis of curriculum vitae, portfolio, and publications.

The minimum requirements for admission to a Doctoral program are:

• a Bachelor Honours Degree with Class I or Class IIA (AQF Level 8) from an Australian higher education institution; or
• a Masters degree (AQF Level 9) incorporating a significant research component with a grade equivalent to 6 on the 7-point Griffith University scale, and an overall GPA of 5.5 on the 7-point scale, from an Australian higher education institution or equivalent international qualification; or
• qualification, or qualification and additional demonstrable experience that is deemed by the Dean, Griffith Graduate Research School to be of a standard comparable to a Bachelor Honours Degree with Class IIA. Refer to section 7.2.5 Establishing Equivalence.

Any admission requirements for specific doctoral programs additional to those listed above may
be approved by Programs Committee based on the aims of the program and will be specified in
the program requirements.
