Medical Technology, Innovation and Design (MSc)
Gain the skills and knowledge to solve the world’s biggest medical challenges wi?th our MSc Medical Technology, Innovation and Design course.
This 1-year interdisciplinary, project-based course brings together students from a variety of backgrounds to design new medical technologies based directly on clinical problems. Collaboration, innovation and entrepreneurship are at the core of this course, alongside a strong understanding of global healthcare issues.
You will be based at the University Hospital Southampton and collaborate closely with colleagues at the University Science Park, working alongside the programme team, startups and medical technology entrepreneurs.
If you have a strong interest in healthcare innovation, medical devices, or improving health outcomes globally, this course will provide you with the tools to make a significant impact.
Campus Information
Highfield Campus
Highfield is our oldest and largest campus, located close to Southampton Common. It's the academic heart of our University and home to social events, sports facilities and our Students' Union.
Winchester Campus
Set next to the River Itchen, Winchester Campus is home to our Winchester School of Art (WSA), where students study art, games design, fashion design and other creative courses. Right in the centre of the historic city of Winchester, but nestled in green parkland, the campus is a vibrant hub for over 1,500 students.
Avenue Campus
Our £2.8m Archaeology building has specialist bone, stone, skeleton and ceramic labs for the study of archaeological finds, as well as seminar and research rooms. Built with sustainability in mind, it uses mostly natural ventilation and underfloor heating. The glass entrance atrium features a 2.5 metre high sandstone megalith sculpture by the British artist Gary Breeze.
Waterfront Campus
Located on the dockside in the south of the city, Waterfront Campus is based at The National Oceanography Centre Southampton. Our ocean and earth sciences courses are all based here.
Boldrewood Innovation Campus
Located near the green spaces of Southampton Common, Boldrewood Campus is our newest campus. It’s home to our engineering and maritime engineering courses and has a number of world-class testing and research laboratories.
Southampton General Hospital
As a medical student the majority of your learning will take place at our Southampton General Hospital Campus. Our lecture theatres, research labs and practice rooms are located in the South Academic Block of this large teaching hospital. The hospital is to the north of the city centre, with great transport links to all parts of the city.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
To apply for this master's in Medical Technology, Innovation and Design, you’ll need a 2:1 degree in a relevant subject, such as:
- Engineering
- Industrial design
- Medicine, clinical practice or Allied Health Professionals (AHP)
- Computer science
- Biological or human sciences
- Healthcare, global health, or social sciences
- Business, innovation or entrepreneurship

The programme is also available as an intercalated degree for undergraduate medical students who have completed at least 3 years of their programme.
