Diploma of Nursing

The HLT54121 Diploma of Nursing will provide you with the knowledge, skills and attributes to become an Enrolled Nurse.

The course is designed for domestic and international students, studying in Australia.

Nursing is one of the most sought after and rewarding careers in healthcare today. Enrolled Nurses work in a variety of healthcare environments to provide clinical care and emotional support to their patients.

The course can provide a pathway into the second year of the Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Wollongong (UOW).

You’ll learn how to communicate effectively with patients and other staff, administer and monitor medications, manage the care of wounds and prepare health assessments and care plans. You will also benefit from on-the-job clinical placements in which you will work as part of a team and under the supervision of Registered Nurses.

You will graduate with a nationally recognised qualification in Nursing in just 18 months with a diverse range of real, practical skills ready for a rewarding career with a world of opportunities.
 

DELIVERY

The course comprises of academic content, clinical and laboratory simulations, and participation in clinical placement.

Throughout the course, you will attend a minimum of 20 hours of face-to-face study per week on campus (Wollongong or Liverpool).

The theory components and practical simulations of this course will be delivered on campus, while clinical placements will be scheduled at facilities in the Illawarra and Sydney regions.

In accordance with the stabilisation of the COVID-19 crisis in NSW, the mode of delivery for this course has resumed to 3 days face-to-face delivery at the UOW College, Wollongong or Liverpool campuses. UOW College Australia will continue to monitor and follow any recommendations relating to COVID-19 safe practices and will make adjustments to the mode of delivery as necessary. Alternate delivery arrangements will be advised if NSW Health orders or other COVID-19 safe practices or recommendations are imposed.

CLINICAL WORK PLACEMENT

The Diploma of Nursing includes a minimum mandatory 400 hours of clinical work placement throughout the duration of the course, across 4-5 placement experiences. Students will be offered additional hours if they have not met the minimum required hours or assessment requirements. UOW College will arrange all clinical work placement experiences with healthcare facilities located in the Illawarra and Sydney regions. Where possible, a student’s residential address will be taken into consideration when allocating students to placement experiences, subject to each student satisfying the full range of ward allocations in rehabilitation, sub-acute and acute areas. Clinical work placements are predominantly within NSW Health facilities but also occur in Residential Aged Care and other private health facilities.

Students are required to attend a combination of morning and afternoon shifts during weekdays in accordance with the schedule and shift times set by the healthcare facility. During clinical work placements, students will be under the direct supervision of the host facility’s Registered Nurses and will be supported and assessed by a UOW College Clinical Placement Facilitator. Where clinical placement experiences are conducted at Ramsey, Healthe Care or Healthscope facilities, student assessment will be conducted by the host facility. UOW College will provide students with two polo shirts for clinical placement. Students will need to purchase their own black pants or blue scrub pants and enclosed black leather shoes.

PSW Opportunity

Students can get 2 years PSW visa if they complete the studies from Sydney Camus and 3 years PSW visa if the course is completed from Wollongong Campus.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Completed Australian HSC (or equivalent Australian Senior Secondary Certificate of Education) or international equivalent,
    OR
  • A Certificate IV or international equivalent (deemed as equivalent to completion of HSC), PLUS Complete a UOW College Australia basic numeracy online assessment with results of exit level three or higher, PLUS
  • Overall IELTS score of 7.0 Academic (minimum 7.0 in all bands) or equivalent, in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English Language Skills Registration Standard.
