Louisiana State University
Louisiana State University (officially Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College, commonly referred to as LSU) is a public research university in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The university was founded in 1853 in what is now known as Pineville, Louisiana, under the name Louisiana State Seminary of Learning & Military Academy.
The current LSU main campus was dedicated in 1926, consists of more than 250 buildings constructed in the style of Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio, and the main campus historic district occupies a 650-acre (2.6 km²) plateau on the banks of the Mississippi River.
LSU is the flagship school of the state of Louisiana, as well as the flagship institution of the Louisiana State University System, and is the most comprehensive university in Louisiana. In 2017, the university enrolled over 25,000 undergraduate and over 5,000 graduate students in 14 schools and colleges. Several of LSU's graduate schools, such as the E. J. Ourso College of Business and the Paul M. Hebert Law Center, have received national recognition in their respective fields of study.
Designated as a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant institution, LSU is also noted for its extensive research facilities, operating some 800 sponsored research projects funded by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. LSU is one of eight universities in the United States with dental, law, veterinary, medical, and Master of Business Administration programs.
The LSU School of Veterinary Medicine is one of only 30 veterinary schools in the country and the only one in Louisiana.
LSU's athletics department fields teams in 21 varsity sports (9 men's, 12 women's), and is a member of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) and the SEC (Southeastern Conference). The university is represented by its mascot, Mike the Tiger.
Important Facts
Located in the state’s capital, Baton Rouge, Louisiana State University is home to one of the nation’s most dominant athletic programs. LSU offers more than 225 fields of study, as well as several pre-health programs.
Some of the most popular are biological sciences, kinesiology, and mechanical engineering. LSU’s study abroad program offers options in 50 countries. At LSU, 58% of the Class of 2018 did not borrow any student loans.
The university awarded $53 million in financial aid and scholarships in 2017-18 and 85% of the students at LSU receive some form of financial assistance. Students at LSU can choose from over 500 student organizations and 36 Greek chapters on campus. About a quarter of students participate in Greek life.
The school also hosts several campus events including Fall Fest, a school-pride celebration, and Homecoming. In the last few years, LSU has produced several first-round athletes including NBA player Ben Simmons, NFL player Leonard Fournette and MLB player Alex Lange.
Other notable alumni and attendees include basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal, NFL wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and the 38th Vice President of the U.S. Hubert Humphrey

LSU THEATRE RANKED NO. 2 IN THE COUNTRY AMONG PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES
The LSU School of Theatre was named as the No. 2 Theatre Bachelor of Arts program among public universities in the United States in the prestigious OnStage Blog’s “Top 25 B.A. Theatre Programs for 2018-19.” This recognition comes after the School of Theatre welcomed the largest class in its history this year.

The undergraduate and graduate programs at the LSU Robert Reich School of Landscape Architecture, or RRSLA, have once again received top rankings from DesignIntelligence magazine, the leading journal of design professionals. The 2018–19 issue of “America’s Best Architecture & Design Schools” ranked LSU’s undergraduate program as number one in the nation and the graduate program as number five in the nation.
LSU LAW RANKED #8 BEST VALUE LAW SCHOOL IN NATION
The LSU Law Center has been ranked the #8 Best Value Law School in the nation in the 2015 rankings released by The National Jurist magazine. LSU Law is the only Louisiana law school, public or private, included in the rankings.
