The Glasgow School of Art

Established in 1845, The Glasgow School of Art (GSA) is internationally recognised as one of Europe's top university-level institutions in the visual creative disciplines. Based in the heart of Glasgow with connections across the globe, our learning, teaching and world-leading research spans art, design, architecture, innovation and technology.

Our studio-based approach to research and teaching is focused on developing intense specialisms alongside collaborative practice. Our studios are a site of interdisciplinarity, peer learning, critical enquiry and prototyping, where our students, tutors, and researchers address problems in new ways and find innovative solutions. Our links to other academic institutions, research partners, and the wider creative industries help us address many of the challenges confronting Glasgow and the wider world.

We are rooted in the city of Glasgow, but our outlook is fiercely international. In recent years we have also established a campus in Forres and a representative office in China. We maintain connections with institutions across Europe and the rest of the world, offering exchange opportunities and collaborating on projects with international students, tutors and practitioners.

The Glasgow School of Art’s Creative Network includes over 20,000 graduates spread across 95 countries around the world, who in turn contribute to the continuing life of the school through teaching, advice and partnerships. Our graduates can be found working in all areas of the creative industries, and they include leading architects, recent Turner Prize winners, and designers at top international firms and fashion houses, as well as world-renowned musicians, writers and academics. A significant number have chosen to stay in Glasgow after graduation, choosing to make the city their home and build on its reputation as one of the best cultural cities in Europe.

At The Glasgow School of Art we pride ourselves on the success of our students and graduates and we do not want any achievements to go unnoticed. Creating links for ideas to develop, accomplishments to be recognised and creative endeavours to grow is at the centre of our Creative Network initiative.

Important Facts

Our Plan for Our Future: Strategic Plan 2022 – 2027 articulates the collective ambition for the future direction of The Glasgow School of Art.  It has been created through extensive and structured conversations with people who care passionately about the School alongside a considered evaluation of the current economic context in which we will deliver our creative education, research and innovation.

The evaluation and contributions were honest and stretching.  Our creative community encouraged us to rediscover our questioning, radical, independent spirit in order to continue to be ground breaking, dynamic and open to new ideas.

They hoped to see the GSA continue to flourish as a specialist art school and for us to commit to earn our reputation every day, through being truly excellent in everything we do.  They asked us to continue our journey of becoming more open and diverse, to concentrate on building a culture that empowered students, graduates and staff to succeed in everything they do. To achieve this, we will deliver confident and considered change through collective and ethical leadership.

We will rebuild the solid foundations that sustain us beyond the period of this plan, consolidate where necessary to evolve or reenergise our areas of excellence.  We will strategically grow our emergent academic areas to reach a new and more diverse student community and enable our world-leading researchers to grow in collective strength and impact, remaining creatively relevant in the years to come.

Everyone across the GSA is key to how we move forward together creating the successful, and transformative art school we want to be.
