The University of Ottawa, often referred to as uOttawa or U of O, is a bilingual public research university in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The main campus is located on 42.5 hectares (105 acres) in the heart of Ottawa's Downtown Core, adjacent to the residential neighbourhood of Sandy Hill, adjacent to Ottawa's Rideau Canal.The University of Ottawa was first established as the College of Bytown in 1848 by the first bishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa, Joseph-Bruno Guigues.

Placed under the direction of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, it was renamed the College of Ottawa in 1861 and received university status five years later through a royal charter.On 5 February 1889, the university was granted a pontifical charter by Pope Leo XIII, elevating the institution to a pontifical university.The University was reorganized on July 1, 1965, as a corporation, independent from any outside body or religious organization. As a result, the civil and pontifical charters were kept by the newly created Saint Paul University, federated with the university. The remaining civil faculties were retained by the reorganized university.
The University of Ottawa is the largest English-French bilingual university in the world.

The university offers a wide variety of academic programs, administered by ten faculties many of which are well-regarded for their quality of education and ranking in respective fields including the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine, the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law (which is noteworthy for offering a dual Civil Law and Common Law degree), the Telfer School of Management, and the University of Ottawa Faculty of Social Sciences.The University of Ottawa Library offers an impressive collection of over 4.5 million titles at 12 different locations.

Ottawa, Canada’s capital is located in the province of Ontario on the border with the province of Quebec, in central Canada. Its location, 350 kilometres east of Toronto, 200 kilometres west of Montreal, and just a short 90-minute flight from New York or Boston, makes travel to other centres easy.

Study in English, French or both
All courses at the University of Ottawa are given in either English or French or in both languages. To gain admission, you must, therefore, demonstrate proficiency in either one of these languages. You are not required to speak both languages to study at uOttawa.

Co-operative education: Alternate between work and study
Take your academic training to the next level by engaging in paid, professional, career-related, employment opportunities specific to your discipline. By taking part in the CO-OP program, you can both work and study. Your work terms, allow you to explore different work environments and career options in your field. They alternate with study terms. You have a valuable learning experience while fulfilling your graduate studies requirements

Opportunity to do a cotutelle
A cotutelle doctoral program offers you the opportunity to complete your doctoral studies at the University of Ottawa as well as at another university (outside of Ontario, and outside of the Ottawa-Gatineau region). In a cotutelle doctoral program you are jointly supervised by a thesis supervisor at each institution and you attend the two universities alternately. You need to take a single comprehensive examination, and you work on a thesis to be defended only once in front of a jury chosen by the two partner universities. Once you have completed your doctoral program, each university confers a separate degree, with a mention of the cotutelle collaboration on the degrees.
