Algoma University

Established in 1965 as Algoma College, Algoma University was initially an affiliate of Laurentian University in Sudbury. In 1967, Algoma College began offering classes in portable building located at the Cambrian College site, now Sault College site. Algoma College moved into its current location, the former Shingwauk Residential School building, in 1971.

We celebrate the values, personalities, and convictions that make each of us unique - because they also bring us together.

This is a place where you’ll connect with the most diverse student body in Ontario. Where you’ll benefit from dedicated and caring faculty. Where you’ll find your true self and more.

When you look back on your Algoma experience, our hope is that it will be defined by more than what you’ll learn in the classroom – that it will be the shared experiences that shape you, and the creation of bonds that will last.

Anishinaabe Values
The spirit of sharing and coming together continues on our campus today.

Located on the former site of the Shingwauk Indian Residential School, we offer a unique and historically rich setting for a cross-cultural community in which Anishinaabe (First Nation, Métis, and Inuit), Canadian, and international students and faculty learn with each other and from one another in a spirit of friendship and respect. We continue to uphold the Seven Grandfather teachings of wisdom, love, respect, bravery, honesty, humility, and truth.

Our Approach to Learning
We pride ourselves on being student-centric. Everything we do is for you.

We keep our classes small to provide you with more opportunities to participate, ask questions, and receive quality feedback from our caring professors. Our professors are always available for help and have an open door policy. And learning goes beyond the classroom. We believe in providing you with as many hands-on learning opportunities as possible to take what you’ve learned in the classroom and applying it to real life work situations. We prepare you for life after school.

Supportive & Accessible Faculty
We pride ourselves on having supportive faculty.

Because of our small class sizes, our faculty know you by name and know your dreams, and they’ll help you every step of the way in reaching them. From one-on-one attention, customized learning, feedback, and an open door policy, our faculty are committed to you. And they’re support goes beyond the classroom. They’ll work with you to perfect an assignment, write you a reference, or provide you with opportunities for more hands-on learning.

More Opportunities
Be a student leader, join a club, compete on our varsity teams, or work alongside our faculty on cutting edge research.
