Master of Advanced Nursing
The Master of Advanced Nursing at The University of Melbourne prepares nurses with advanced knowledge and practice skills to assume responsibility for establishing new professional roles, devising new models of care and leading dynamic changes to nursing practice.
The first year of study in Master of Advanced Nursing provides the opportunity for students to extend their existing nursing knowledge and develop skills in specialty practice.
The second year of study builds on this specialisation by focusing on advanced practice skills and knowledge and prepare students for clinical leadership roles in nursing and healthcare.
On completion of the Master of Advanced Nursing the student will have achieved the following learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of relevant research literature related to Advanced Nursing Practice
- Ability to analyse key social and political influences on the delivery of specialist and Advanced Practice Nursing services
- The knowledge and skills required to explore and evaluate the status of (and potential for) Advanced Nursing Practice in national and international contexts
- Knowledge and skills to support extension to practice and the development of therapeutic and evidence-based nursing interventions in specialty and Advanced Nursing Practice
- The skills required to develop, implement and undertake new and innovative practices within established legislative and professional boundaries
- Knowledge and skills to support culturally competent practice, leadership and/or education relevant to Advanced Nursing Practice
Course description
The Master of Advanced Nursing is an 18-month program. The first year of study provides the opportunity for students to extend their existing nursing knowledge and develop skills in specialty practice.
The remainder of the course builds on this specialisation by focusing on advanced practice skills and knowledge. Specifically, it will prepare students for clinical leadership roles in nursing and healthcare.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
- You need to successfully complete an undergraduate degree, either from the University of Melbourne, another Australian institution, or a university overseas. You also need to meet English language requirements and be eligible to be offered an international graduate place.
- If you've achieved high marks in your Melbourne undergraduate studies you can even be made an early offer. Depending on your previous studies and experience you could also be eligible for credit towards your studies at the University.
TOEFL – you need a score from a minimum of 577+ including a score of at least 4.5 in the Test of Written English for a paper-based test. Or a score of at least 79 and scores of at least 21 for writing, 18 for speaking, 13 for reading, 13 for listening for an internet-based test.
IELTS – you need a score from a minimum of 6.5 or more in the Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS), with no bands less than 6.0.
Pearson Test of English – you need an overall score from a minimum between 58-64 inclusive and achieve no PTE communicative skills score below 50.
Cambridge English, Advanced/Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) – you need a Cambridge English Score from a minimum 176 with no skill below 169.
