UQ is a key research provider in food science and technology, ranked first in Australia. Your teachers are active academics who'll share the latest knowledge in food safety and quality management, food chemistry and microbiology, food processing, and new food product development.

You'll refine your laboratory skills during practicals and research courses, gain access to the Food Science Innovation Precinct – a world-class teaching, research, training and development unit – and have the flexibility to tailor your studies to your interests and career goals, with specialised electives such as business, agriculture and biotechnology.

You can also choose to undertake a 14-week industry experience in their final year, where you'll apply your theoretical knowledge to a food-related workplace situation, acquire a detailed understanding of industry operations, and gain professional skills which will enhance your career opportunities.

As a graduate, you'll be able to apply leadership, research and problem-solving skills to meet the global challenges associated with feeding the world by contributing to the provision of high-quality, safe and nutritionally valuable food and food products, as well as having an understanding of the global policy dialogue on food and food products.

Campus Information

St Lucia

Situated on 114 hectares of Brisbane River-bound land, UQ’s main campus is a vibrant mix of majestic sandstone buildings and contemporary architecture, landscaped gardens and lakes. Fanning out from the heritage-listed Great Court, you’ll find modern teaching and research facilities, including laboratories, lecture theatres, and Queensland’s largest research library. The expansive grounds are also home to a variety of sporting facilities, museums, cafes, and those famous Jacaranda trees. The St Lucia campus is only seven kilometres from Brisbane’s city centre, making it an appealing place to study, work or visit.

Prerequisites

Bachelor degree in a food science, food technology or food engineering field, or an approved discipline.
UQ or equivalent GPA of 5 or above on a 7 point scale.
