Programme overview
Engage in the traditional M?ori arts of raranga (weaving) or whakairo (carving) to advance skills and knowledge base required to create works of art within your chosen field.
Students engaged in this study will explore traditional practices and techniques of raranga or whakairo, and also gain complimentary skills in business, curatorship, exhibition practices and taonga management.
Graduates from this programme will be able to:
- demonstrate excellence in their chosen art field of weaving or carving
- demonstrate an understanding of tikanga M?ori through application of their art practice
- contribute to the revival and survival of ancient M?ori art practice
- contribute to the evolution of M?ori art through individual creative processes and artistic expression
- apply relevant M?ori language (vocabulary, terminology, whakatauk?, karakia, and k?waha) to their major discipline
- identify appropriate relationships within the toi community, to include marae, hap? and iwi and demonstrate effective engagement
- engage in arts entrepreneurship with confidence
