The Department of English at the University of Nebraska Kearney confers a Master of Arts degree through its on-campus and online graduate programs.

The Master of Arts in English program focuses on the study of literature; composition, rhetoric, and language; childhood and youth studies; and creative writing. Seminar, workshop, and directed reading course offerings provide an engaging and interactive learning opportunity for students. The program is designed for active, in-service teachers seeking further professional or personal development, as well as those seeking preparation for a Ph.D. in English or an MFA program.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Admission Requirements
The following outlines UNK admissions requirements for first-time entering freshmen and transfer students. The requirements do not pertain to international applicants, readmissions and non-degree students.
 
Assured Admission
In addition to graduation from an accredited high school, or equivalent, all students seeking entry to the University must have successfully completed a core of selected high school courses spread over a number of disciplines. Additionally, students are required to meet performance criteria by ranking in the top half of their graduating high school class OR must meet certain performance criteria, based on scores from ACT or SAT national examinations. The entrance requirements incorporate a process for admitting students who do not meet one or more of the admission criteria, yet show promise of academic success.

English Proficiency Requirement: Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo are accepted for English proficiency.  Applicants whose native language is English or that have a baccalaureate or other advanced degree from a U.S. college or university are exempt from the English proficiency requirement. Minimum scores for admission to graduate studies for the TOEFL paper-based (pBT) is 550, the TOEFL internet based (iBT) is 79, IELTS is 6.5, and Duolingo is 110. Language proficiency scores are valid for two (2) years from the test date.
