Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) – Studio Art

The BFA in studio art is a professional degree that allows you to focus on artistic development and is structured to help you develop a strong portfolio that can lead to either professional work or graduate school. With this degree, you must choose to emphasize in one of the studio disciplines listed below; or you may create an interdisciplinary emphasis with the assistance of your academic adviser. The BFA does not require additional foreign language beyond the 2 years required for admission to UNL.

Ceramics
You will be introduced to a range of possibilities in terms of forming and firing technologies.

Painting/Drawing
The painting and drawing program is engaged in providing the technical and conceptual framework for artists interested in examining content through two-dimensional processes.

Photography
The Photography area offers a range of studio courses in darkroom and digital photography that focus on technical, conceptual and aesthetic aspects of the medium as well as photography theory, history, criticism and contemporary practice.

Printmaking
The printmaking program seeks to present the creative potential inherent in all the various print media, including intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, and relief, as well as non-toxic techniques, new technologies, book arts and alternative presentations, and to help expand definitions of the print.

Sculpture
Through a diversity of materials, philosophies and solutions, you will be encouraged to mine the boundaries of your potential, challenge the notions of contemporary art and be a creative force in the evolution of our culture

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

First-Year Applicants Should:

Have a 3.0 cumulative high school grade point average.
Or, score 20 or higher on the ACT, writing portion not required.
Or, score a total of 1040 or higher on the SAT Critical Reading and Math sections.
Or, rank in the top half of their high school graduating class.
All first-year applicants under the age of 23 are encouraged to submit an official ACT or SAT score.
Note: You are not required to submit an ACT or SAT score to be considered for admission or scholarships.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
Score of at least 79 (iBT). The University of Nebraska–Lincoln institution code is 6877. Send your TOEFL score report via the TOEFL website.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
An overall band score of the academic test of at least 6.5. The general training exam is not accepted. No institutional code is needed.

Duolingo English Test (accepted Feb. 3, 2020 – December 31, 2022)
Graduate minimum score of 110.

TOEFL, IELTS and Duolingo scores are valid for two years.
