Certificate of Graduate Study in Administrative Science

The COGS in Administrative Science is designed to assist students graduating with a Liberal Studies, General Studies, Bachelor of Professional Studies, Human Services, Business, or related field, with years of experience to enter higher education, earn a stackable certificate (stackable with the Master of Professional Studies) and possibly earn a higher degree (MPS) primarily for advanced knowledge and career advancement. Many administrative and management leaders have a bachelor’s degree in some discipline such as business, human services management or other related field. As noted in the labor market statistics/demand section, the growth of this industry will necessitate a well-trained generation of individuals with analytical skills to be able to review an organization’s procedures and find ways to improve efficiency; the communication skills to work with diverse groups in the ever-changing marketplace; detail-oriented observational skills to warrant an understanding of the daily operational needs of the workplace; and leadership skills with the ability to organize and motivate employees and deal with issues that may arise. The COGS will help them better achieve the skills needed for their superior functioning in the modern marketplace. This proposal is distinct from a traditional business proposal because its primary focus is the social study of administering complex organizations. The COGS centers its focus on study of the structure and dynamics of large-scale organizations such as corporations, educational institutions, and governments. Emphasis is placed on ecological, technological, and cultural forces that shape these organizations as well as their impact on society.
