Master of Fine Arts: Rainier Writing Workshop

The Master of Arts in Creative Writing is a three-year, four-residency program with an emphasis in fiction, nonfiction, poetry. Students participate in a 10-day summer residency on campus and work remotely one-on-one with a faculty member during the year.

  • Yearly residencies are held on the PLU campus in magnificent summer weather, in the shadow of Mount Rainier, with easy access to Seattle’s urban culture.
  • Alumni have generated a substantial record of success in publication, teaching, and other literary achievements.

English Proficiency Requirements

Minimum TOEFL or IELTS requirements are as follows:

  • TOEFL-IBT:- 83
  • IELTS:- 6.5

The English proficiency requirement can also be met if applicants have completed one of the following:

  • A bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree from a regionally-accredited institution in the United States. (This does not apply to nursing programs).
  • A baccalaureate degree or higher from a recognized college or university in an English-speaking country or region, including Australia, Canada (other than Quebec), Great Britain, Ireland, or New Zealand. (This does not apply to nursing programs).
  • Both primary and secondary education in an English-speaking country or region, including Australia, Canada (other than Quebec), Great Britain, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United States. Students are considered to be a native English speaker.
  • A recognized Intensive English Program (IEP) in the United States and received an English proficiency level equivalent to the required minimum TOEFL/IELTS scores of the applied program.
