Want a deeper understanding of writing to get an edge in your career? In this program, we can give you an understanding of literary heritage and the advanced writing skills you need for a career as a professor, publisher, lawyer, marketer—practically anything.

In fact, we've structured our program to help you meet a variety of career goals. For instance, in addition to your classes, you'll work one-on-one with a graduate faculty member, participate in Graduate Research Day, and write a thesis or submit work for presentation at regional and national conferences. Plus, we're going to help you choose the concentration that's best for your future. If you choose creative writing, we'll put you in workshops that'll develop your skills as a poet, fiction, or nonfiction writer. You'll sharpen your abilities as a sensitive, critical reader of literature, which will further your skills as a creative writer. Choose literature and you'll read, discuss, study, and critique British and American works. Finally, if you're interested in become a teacher or professional writer, rhetoric and composition will be right up your alley. You'll learn about the many roles of writing in business and industry, including politics, advertising, and more.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

International students from non-English speaking countries are required to submit English proficiency scores (TOEFL/IELTS/PTEA) that meet the Graduate School's minimum score requirements.

TOEFL: 80
IELTS: 6.5
PTEA: 53
IELA: 176
Duolingo: 120

We will only accept English proficiency scores that have been taken within a two (2) year period from the date that the application was submitted. Scores that exceed this time frame are considered expired and will not be accepted. We will not accept English proficiency test scores that are more than two years old unless program requests a recency waiver on the applicant's behalf.

Applicants must contact the testing agency to have the official scores sent to the UAB Graduate School. TOEFL scores should be submitted to institution code 1856; IELTS and PTEA scores should be issued electronically or mailed directly to the UAB Graduate School.
UAB does not accept My Best Scores from TOEFL. You will need to submit individual test date score reports to your application.
