BA (Hons) Secondary Education (11-16) and English with QTS
Words are powerful. English lies at the heart of education, giving young people a voice and opening doors for their future. Our BSc (Hons) Secondary Education (11-16) and English course is a three-year programme, leading to an honours degree and a recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). It offers you a comprehensive programme of study in the concepts of English language and literature, including a focus on grammar and etymology, the study of prose, poetry, and drama, and practical teaching skills grounded in theory. It's ideal if you are looking to teach English at Key Stages 3 and 4 (ages 11-16).
During the first year of the course, our dedicated tutors will support you to consolidate and develop your knowledge of English beyond A-level. You'll also have the opportunity to gain valuable preparatory knowledge and understanding of your role as a teacher in secondary education and complete a short placement in one of our partner schools. In the second year, you'll focus on deepening your knowledge and understanding of English and begin to develop your teaching skills via further school-based experience. You'll start gathering evidence towards the Department for Education Teachers' Standards so that we can monitor your progress towards your recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status.
At honours-level, you'll explore the key theories and techniques of teaching, learning and assessment. We'll support you as you discover how to apply them in practice and encourage you as you learn to plan lessons, deliver classes, assess your students' performances and provide constructive feedback. Our supportive tutors and subject specialist school mentors will work to help you become an expert, engaging and inclusive mathematics teacher with high standards of professionalism and fulfil the requirements for your recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status.
