Biochemistry (with Foundation Year) BSc (Hons)

Biochemistry brings together biology and chemistry to look at processes at molecular level, and is relevant to a range of disciplines including genetics, microbiology, forensics, plant science and medicine.

You can complete an optional work placement year as part of this degree course at no extra cost.

This course includes an integrated foundation year – ideal if you need additional preparation in the fundamental sciences and/or if you don’t have sufficient tariff points to join Year 1 of the degree directly. Apart from the foundation year, the remainder of this degree is identical to the programme BSc (Hons) Biochemistry and leads to the same level award.

You develop your knowledge and skills in subjects such as biotechnology, molecular biology, biomedical sciences and analytical techniques currently used by the industry, particularly the pharmaceutical and drug discovery sectors. It takes you on a journey of studying chemical compounds and reactions occurring in the cells of living organisms including the molecular and biochemical analysis of life processes. It makes you appreciate how different macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids) interact to create life.

You learn how gene expression is controlled and how it brings diversity in life, what goes wrong to cause metabolic diseases, how modern genetic tools and stem cells are at the cusp of bringing a revolution in gene therapy and healthcare. You also learn about microbiology, microbial diversity and how we counter infectious diseases. You are introduced to concepts such as drug resistance and its development.

You study at Teesside University’s main Middlesbrough campus, but during your degree you have the opportunity to gain valuable experience at the new National Horizons Centre at the University’s Darlington campus which is home to a range of state-of-the-art facilities. This £22m purpose-built biosciences research, education and training facility is a focal point for the growing regional biosciences community.

Placements, internships and work experience

Increasing student numbers at university makes entry in to the graduate job market very competitive. Research surveys, including those undertaken by High Flyers, highlight the large number of applications for graduate roles (sometimes as high as 70-80 applications for roles on popular graduate training schemes with the big national and international organisations).

Just having a good degree is not enough to give you the best platform to compete for graduate roles - which means work experience, work placements or volunteering is absolutely essential. Employers will be expecting you to have gained experience, articulate what you have gained, including skills you have developed that will be needed in their business.

2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)

FOR INDIA

For entry onto Year 1:

India Standard XII – 65% minimum from all state boards.
Diploma from the State Board of Technical Education with 60% minimum (including MEng)
Holders of the International Baccalaureate Diploma with 28 points or more will be considered for direct admission to Bachelor degree courses

Advanced entry to undergraduate:

You may be eligible to enter Year 2 of a degree programme if you have a three or four-year diploma
Decided on a case-by-case basis – your course must closely match our own curricula.

FOR BANGLADESH

For entry onto Year 1: Higher Secondary Certificate (70% minimum) and an approved foundation course
For entry onto Higher National Diploma: Higher Secondary Certificate with a grade-point average of 4.5
For entry onto Integrated Master of Engineering – MEng (Hons): Diploma pass – 70% minimum

Advanced entry to undergraduate:
You can go straight to Year 2 if you have a three-year bachelor degree with a 55% score
Year 3 entry for exceptional candidates is decided on a case-by-case basis – your course must closely match our own curricula.

FOR NEPAL

For entry onto Year 1: Standard XII – 65% minimum overall with relevant subjects at least 65%
For entry onto Integrated Master of Engineering – MEng (Hons): Standard XII – 70% minimum overall with relevant subjects at least 70%
Advanced entry to undergraduate: You may be eligible to enter Year 3 of a degree programme if you have completed a three-year degree programme with a minimum of 60% from a recognised Napalese university.

FOR PAKISTAN

For entry onto Year 1:

If you have an excellent Higher Secondary School Certificate, intermediate or FA/FSc (70%+) or,
Two-year bachelor degree with a minimum of 60%

Advanced entry to undergraduate:

You may be considered for advanced entry onto an undergraduate programme if you have excellent results from three-year degree from a recognised institution
You need a minimum of 60% from a three-year bachelor degree for second-year entry
You need a minimum of 60% from a four-year bachelor degree for third-year entry
