Diploma in Public Relations
Our Public Relations (PR) diploma program provides relevant, in-depth training for the next wave of public relations and communications professionals. At KPU your PR education is:
- Flexible: This program is an open-intake, allowing you to work and complete your studies at a pace that suits your lifestyle. Courses are offered year-round on our Surrey and Richmond campuses.
- Extendable: With careful planning, you can complete the diploma as part of another degree at KPU, counting towards as much as half the credits required for a four-year BBA in Marketing or a BA in Journalism.
- Experiential: Our instructors are industry professionals who combine PR theory with hands-on experiential learning. You have the option of pursuing Co-Op work terms during your study.
- Current: Our courses are aligned with the latest academic and industry standards, and are developed with an advisory committee of PR experts.

Job Opportunity Potential
Our diploma stands on its own but is also an excellent complement for professionals with previous education or experience looking to get into the PR industry. Graduates have found employment in a variety of positions in multinational corporations, nonprofit organizations, government, and PR agencies.
Specialists in public relations and communications perform some or all of the following duties:
- Create and evaluate communications strategies and publicity programs to inform clients, employees, and the general public of initiatives and policies of businesses, governments, arts, and non-profit organizations
- Conduct public opinion research to identify audience interests
- Write professionally for print, online, broadcast, and social media
- Take photos, shoot video, produce podcasts, create websites
- Produce social media graphics, brochures, and other marketing materials
- Arrange interviews and news conferences
- Build and manage relationships with media and influencers
- Design social media campaigns to engage audiences and raise awareness
- Oversee organizational communications and build an organizational culture
- Manage issues and defuse reputational crises
- Act as spokesperson for an organization and answer written and oral inquiries
- Engage stakeholders and consult with communities on controversial issues
- Organize and coordinate events, presentations, reports, meetings, workshops and ceremonies for fundraising, promotional and informational purposes.

If your program was less than 8 months
- You aren’t eligible for a PGWP.
If your program was more than 8 months but less than 2 years
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for up to the same length as your study program.
For example, if you completed a 9-month program, we may give you a work permit for up to 9 months.
If your program was 2 years or more
- We may give you a PGWP that’s valid for 3 years.
If you completed more than 1 program
- You may be able to get a PGWP that combines the length of each program.
Each of the programs you completed -
- must be PGWP-eligible and at least 8 months in length
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
To be admitted as a student in an undergraduate program, you must show that:
- You meet KPU’s Undergraduate English Proficiency Requirement
- You have graduated from high school (secondary school) or completed 24 or more undergraduate-level credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0*
*Don’t meet this requirement? If you will be 19 years of age or older on the first day of classes, it’s possible to be admitted as a mature student at the discretion of the Registrar. Get in touch with KPU International for more info.
