The Communication Studies major provides students with a critical understanding of the complex, vital role that communication plays in contemporary life. Course-work offers students a host of intellectual, problem-solving, and career-related skills. In contemporary society, which is characterized by a dazzling array of new technologies, rapid social change, instant messaging, and dynamic interpersonal relationships, it is imperative that students appreciate the ways communication influences everyday life. Students who obtain a major in communication will take classes from a nationally ranked faculty and gain an appreciation for the social scientific study of communication.

Communication Studies majors pursue a variety of managerial training programs in all types of industries, along with opportunities in Federal, state, and local governments along with pursuing graduate degrees. Depending on the coursework that is taken, specific opportunities may include: Organizational Training and Development, Team Facilitation, Organizational/Business Analyst, Mediator, Human Resources, Internal Consultant, Labor Negotiator, Recruitment for Private Schools, Recruitment for Universities, Community Affairs Coordinator, Government Affair Coordinator, Sales, Fundraising, Account Representative, Researcher, Insurance, Communications Manager, Product Purchaser.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

The following admission requirements apply to students who have not completed any college-level course work after completing secondary school.

  1. Cumulative secondary school GPA equivalent to a 2.3 on the US grading scale for most programs. The College of Engineering requires a 3.0 and the College of Education and Human Services requires a 2.5.
  2. Proof of English proficiency.
  3. Students who have attended a US high school or secondary school in another country that follows the US high school curriculum must submit ACT or SAT scores. These students must submit a minimum total ACT score of 16, or a minimum old total SAT score of 770 (before March 1, 2016), or a minimum new total SAT score of 880 (after March 1, 2016). Students who are applying to the Honors College and student athletes must comply with NCAA eligibility requirements.   4. Official transcripts of academic work and completion certificates from each secondary school and university attended. PHOTOCOPIES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
