Strength and Conditioning MSc

Strength and Conditioning is a popular area within sport science, predominantly from within the discipline of physiology, often requiring knowledge of inter-disciplinary applied sport science and coaching.

The primary focus of this programme is sporting performance. However, the application of strength and conditioning principles to diverse areas including exercise, pre- and rehabilitation, youth and ageing populations, and other specific and clinical populations is becoming more commonplace.

Our graduates work around the world as strength and conditioning and physical preparation specialists for professional sports teams and clubs, for the UK and US army and air force, applying their knowledge by working with clinical populations in health settings, developing strategies for improving staff health and wellbeing in large organisations across a variety of industries, and undertaking doctoral study.

The qualification and skills you gain in this programme will complement the applied experience and any professional accreditation for those aspiring to be practitioners at the cutting edge of strength and conditioning. Primary roles exist in the sports performance area, but you may also apply your skills to work in the areas of exercise and fitness, rehabilitation and the wider sports industry.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

A UK 2:1 honours degree, or its international equivalent, in a sport and exercise science subject area.

We may also consider your application if you have other academic or professional qualifications or considerable relevant experience; please contact us to check before you apply. We will consider:

  • Strengths and weaknesses in grade profiles related to the programme.
  • Applied experience as an athlete or coach.
  • Applied experience working with other athletes and coaches.
  • Professional training or accreditation in strength and conditioning.
  • References.

Postgraduate entry requirements for students from India.

In order to qualify for entry to master’s study at the University of Edinburgh, you must have a good degree from a highly ranked university in India.

  • Entry requirements will vary, depending on the intended programme of study. However, the minimum score you should have achieved is 60% or more in your Bachelor's study.
  • We may also accept equivalent qualifications or work experience.
  • Applicants who meet this minimum may be considered for entry and will be measured competitively against other applicants. For many of our programmes, competition is high and in the majority of cases, a very high First Class degree will be required. Certain programmes will also have specific requirements in terms of both the overall degree result and strengths in particular subjects which are seen as relevant to that degree.

Applicants with an undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline will be considered for the 6 year programme.
