This programme is a significant stepping stone toward a worthwhile career as a seafarer. The Class 5 is a 45 credit certificate programme to add on to your endorsement in Marine Engineering Class 6. This optional endorsement recognises those that can apply their skill to advanced vessel systems including electrical and control systems.
You need 200 hours of seatime on any powered vessel and a completed MEC6 MNZ Training Record Book to apply.

Marine Engineers ensure the safe operation and essential maintenance of systems for the benefit of the crew and surrounding environment. This programme aims to develop these essential skills. Our focus on safety and leadership has earned New Zealand a solid reputation worldwide for maritime engineering training. For example, The Marine Engineer Class 5 license (MEC5) is internationally recognised.

PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
