Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education (grades 8-12)

The Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education (grades 8-12) at MSU provides initial certification programs for undergraduate and graduate students who want to teach in public high schools. Certification is received through the College of Education while a candidate is completing their bachelor's degree in their chosen discipline field. For persons interested in secondary education certification, please contact Dr. Lesia Lennex, Secondary Education Program Coordinator, Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education.

Our students are immersed in research on effective classroom teaching and pursue coursework in the following:

Human growth and development
Learning theories, assessment and diversity
Educational methods and technology
Classroom organization and management.
Extensive field experiences will accompany all of your instructional methods classes. Students complete 200 hours of field experience before their final semester of student teaching begins.

During your semester of student teaching you will have the chance to work under experienced educators who will mentor you and provide you with feedback to improve your skills. The experience you earn with us will prepare you professionally to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds who have a wide variety of needs.

Secondary Certification (8-12)
Students seeking initial secondary certification (8-12) are required to complete a bachelor's degree from the following teaching preparation programs: biological science, business, chemistry, Earth and space sciences, English, mathematics, physics or social studies. Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Below is the admission process for undergraduate international students. It should answer the majority of questions related to the process. This list is not intended to be either complete or permanent. It will be updated periodically.

Step 1

Step 2
Does the degree program offer sufficient face-to-face classes for an I-20

  • Federal law requires that a program offer a certain number of face-to-face classes before immigration documents can be issued for the student to come to campus. MSU offers programs that are entirely online and many online/hybrid classes.
  • Because programs are subject to change, it is advisable to check once per semester.

Step 3
Does the degree program require a single-tier or two-tier admission process

  • A majority of MSU’s programs only require admission to the University.
  • However, some programs (e.g. BS Nursing and BS Imaging Sciences), require both admission to the University and to the specific program. The admissions process could take several months.

Step 4

Additional materials needed:

  • Original, official proof of academic credentials:
    • High school transcript showing proof of graduation
    • If a student has completed any previous academic coursework at the college/university level, then a WES evaluation is required.
    • GPA must be at least 2.00
  • Original, official proof of English proficiency:
    • IELTS 5.0, TOEFL 61, or Michigan Test 82, or
    • From an English-speaking country listed on MSU’s website, or
    • Successfully graduated from a U.S. high school (must also submit ACT or SAT scores), or
    • Sufficient ACT or SAT scores
    • Completed at least 24 hours from a college/university in the United States
  • Original, official financial documents:
    • Must be on official bank letterhead, in English, and less than three months old
    • Must be a minimum of $34,000 US dollars (a financial award, such as a scholarship, reduces this amount)
    • If someone else, such as a parent, is sponsoring, then a Letter of Support is needed. The Letter of Support template will be emailed.
    • Scholarship letters from certain countries may be emailed.
  • Official ACT or SAT score (optional)
    • Your ACT or SAT scores may be used for class placement and/or scholarship awards.
  • Picture page of passport and/or visa and/or I-20.
  • Transfer Form (needed for students who have previously studied in the U.S.)
  • Other items as required by the student’s situation.
