Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS)

If you're interested in a career that combines helping others with using the latest medical technology, consider Morehead State's Bachelor of Science in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS). Our program offers you not only the knowledge, but the hands-on experience to pursue a career in medical imaging.

Sonography is the use of sound waves to generate an image for the assessment and diagnosis of various medical conditions. Sonography is commonly associated with obstetrics and the use of ultrasound imaging during pregnancy, but this technology has many other applications in the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions throughout the body. Along with lecture courses, the program provides hands-on opportunities in its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and during clinical assignments at health care agencies associated with the program. Graduates may be eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers' (ARDMS) national certifying examinations in the areas of sonographic physics and instrumentation, abdomen and obstetrics/gynecology. The program prepares graduates who seek employment in hospitals, imaging centers and physicians' offices as diagnostic medical sonographers.

Along with lecture courses, the program provides hands-on opportunities in its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and during clinical assignments at health care agencies throughout the region.

The program has a selective admission process and limited enrollment.  Students are admitted once a year in April, with classes beginning in the second summer session of each year.  The qualified applicant must be a radiographer who is registry-eligible or registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, and must have completed all prerequisites prior to entry.

Following official acceptance, the program consists of 13 months (full-time) of didactic coursework and clinical practice averaging 30 - 36 hours per week.  The student will begin courses during Summer II.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Below is the admission process for undergraduate international students. It should answer the majority of questions related to the process. This list is not intended to be either complete or permanent. It will be updated periodically.

Step 1

Step 2
Does the degree program offer sufficient face-to-face classes for an I-20

  • Federal law requires that a program offer a certain number of face-to-face classes before immigration documents can be issued for the student to come to campus. MSU offers programs that are entirely online and many online/hybrid classes.
  • Because programs are subject to change, it is advisable to check once per semester.

Step 3
Does the degree program require a single-tier or two-tier admission process

  • A majority of MSU’s programs only require admission to the University.
  • However, some programs (e.g. BS Nursing and BS Imaging Sciences), require both admission to the University and to the specific program. The admissions process could take several months.

Step 4

Additional materials needed:

  • Original, official proof of academic credentials:
    • High school transcript showing proof of graduation
    • If a student has completed any previous academic coursework at the college/university level, then a WES evaluation is required.
    • GPA must be at least 2.00
  • Original, official proof of English proficiency:
    • IELTS 5.0, TOEFL 61, or Michigan Test 82, or
    • From an English-speaking country listed on MSU’s website, or
    • Successfully graduated from a U.S. high school (must also submit ACT or SAT scores), or
    • Sufficient ACT or SAT scores
    • Completed at least 24 hours from a college/university in the United States
  • Original, official financial documents:
    • Must be on official bank letterhead, in English, and less than three months old
    • Must be a minimum of $34,000 US dollars (a financial award, such as a scholarship, reduces this amount)
    • If someone else, such as a parent, is sponsoring, then a Letter of Support is needed. The Letter of Support template will be emailed.
    • Scholarship letters from certain countries may be emailed.
  • Official ACT or SAT score (optional)
    • Your ACT or SAT scores may be used for class placement and/or scholarship awards.
  • Picture page of passport and/or visa and/or I-20.
  • Transfer Form (needed for students who have previously studied in the U.S.)
  • Other items as required by the student’s situation.
