Research degrees at the Barts Cancer Institute
The School of Medicine and Dentistry was placed within the top seven UK institutions in all Units of Assessment – Clinical Medicine; Public Health, Health Services and Primary Care; and Allied Health Professions, Dentistry, Nursing and Pharmacy- during REF 2014.
Barts Cancer Institute currently consists of six research centres, driven by a strong translational theme, with emphasis on specialised research areas, which focus on specific cancers. At the forefront of a number of scientific and medical discoveries, the Institute is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. The research can be broadly categorised into the following research centres:

- Centre for Cancer Genomics & Computational Biology
- Centre for Haemato-Oncology
- Centre for Tumour Biology
- Centre for Tumour Microenvironment
- Centre for Experimental Cancer Medicine
The Barts Cancer Institute, often called BCI, has over 100 research students undertaking PhD or MD Res degrees. These students carry out an original research project in one of our Institute laboratories at Charterhouse Square campus. There are a wide variety of funding oportunites available, including research grants, college studentships and international scholarships.
MRes+PhD programmes: Please note, if you are applying for the MRC Translational Immunology, Inflammation and Cancer PhD studentships, you need to apply via the MRes route.

Mile End Campus
It contains the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science and Engineering, the Queens' Building, the main college library, the student union, Draper's bar and club, several restaurants, a number of halls of residences and a gym. The educational and research sites of the Arts Research Centre, Computer Science, the large Engineering building, G.E. Fogg Building, Francis Bancroft Building, G. O. Jones Building, Joseph Priestley Building, Lock-keeper's Graduate Centre, and the Mathematical Science Building, are all located within the Mile End campus
