Master of Clinical Psychology

Gain the knowledge and practical experience to work as a professional clinical psychologist through the Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP). With expert supervision in clinics, teaching hospitals and community settings, the course will give you the skills to work in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of psychological disorders.

The MCP involves two years of full-time study. You will develop a theoretical foundation through coursework taught by leading academic staff at the University of Sydney. Then, you can put this to the test in real situations through 1200 hours of clinical placements, both in our on-campus Psychology Clinic as well as outstanding teaching hospitals like Westmead Hospital and the Children's Hospital at Westmead. Finally, your learning will be bolstered by the opportunity to specialise with a research-based project in your own are of interest.

Graduates of the MCP program leave with a scientific and evidence-based approach to clinical psychology. The program’s cognitive-behavioural approach to treatment, coupled with alternative models of therapy introduced in the second year, will ensure you will have with both depth and breadth to your clinical training.

The MCP is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as a 5th and 6th year of study, and is an approved qualification for Associate Membership of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA) and the Australian Psychological Society (APS) College of Clinical Psychologists. The Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA), through APAC, also recognizes the program for the purposes of registration and for endorsement of practice in clinical psychology. This program is recognised by the NSW Ministry of Health as qualifying the holder for progression to the grade of clinical psychology.

Career Pathways
The Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) is the path to professional specialisation in clinical psychology. By the end of this degree, you will have the highly developed knowledge base and strong clinical skills needed to work as a professional clinical psychologist in many clinical and community settings.

The Master of Clinical Psychology (MCP) is recognised by the NSW Ministry of Health as qualifying the holder for progression to the grade of clinical psychologist.

Upon graduation, students are eligible for membership of the APS College of Clinical Psychologists, and Associate Membership of the Australian Clinical Psychology Association (ACPA).

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Completion of an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) accredited four year bachelors degree with honours in psychology from a higher education provider, gaining at least an upper second class (2.1) honours or equivalent. 
The bachelors degree with honours must have been completed within 10 years of commencing the MCP or the MCP/PhD.
The bachelors degree with honours must include a major research project and thesis as an essential part of the degree.
You must satisfy the Head of the School of Psychology (or delegate) of your personal suitability for the practice of clinical psychology through your application, references and selection interview.
Applicants for the MCP/PhD must additionally meet the PhD admission requirements.
Non-Australian qualifications (if relevant)

The Australian Psychological Accreditation Council (APAC) provides information on APAC accredited psychology qualifications in Australia.

The Australian Psychological Society (APS) assesses non-Australian qualifications for APAC equivalence. All qualifications obtained from a non-Australian Higher Education Provider must be assessed as equivalent by the Australian Psychological Society (APS) before an application may be submitted.

English language requirements (if relevant)

Applicants must comply with the English language requirements of the University of Sydney (a minimum of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band). English language test scores must be less than two years old from course commencement.

Applicants must also comply with the English language requirements of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Additional English language requirements apply under the current AHPRA standards for registration. Where AHPRA standards are inconsistent with University of Sydney standards, the higher standard will apply. 

Applicants relying on primary, secondary and/or tertiary qualifications to satisfy AHPRA's English language requirements must provide documentary evidence to demonstrate completion of the qualification, language of instruction, duration and recognised country. Recognised countries include: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, UK or USA.

TOEFL - IBT score - A minimum result of 96 overall including a minimum result of 23 in Reading, Listening and Speaking and 25 in Writing

IELTS score - A minimum result of 7.0 overall and a minimum result of 7.0 in each band

TOEFL - PBT score - A minimum result of 592 overall including a minimum result of 4.5 in Writing

Pearsons Test of English - A minimum result of 68 overall and a minimum result of 54 in each band
