The Master of Science in Microbiology is a scientific-biological study course, based on fundamental research with a special focus on Microbiology in its full diversity. This covers phylogeny, physiology, cell, and molecular biology of organisms from all three domains of life.

The program is interdisciplinary in nature and includes modules at external research institutes such as the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Hans Knöll Institute), the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, and cooperation with relevant biotechnology corporations.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

For this master's program you need a subject-specific undergraduate degree (minimum 6 semesters/180 ECTS-Credits) or an equivalent degree, containing knowledge in Microbiology of at least 15 credits (ECTS) and practical research methods.

The bachelor's final grade (CGPA) must be GOOD or higher (German and US systems 2.5).

If you are eligible for direct admission to the university, you have to prove that your German language corresponds to level DSH-2. You cannot start your studies at the Friedrich Schiller University Jena if you have only passed the DSH-1 exam. The following certificates accredited by the German Rectors Conference will be recognized as equivalents:

  • Goethe Certificate C2 (GDS)
  • German Language Diploma Level II of the KMK (DSD II)
  • TestDaF, at least TDN 4 in all four parts of the examination
  • telc Certificate C1 German for Higher Education
  • German exam as part of the assessment test at a Studienkolleg

Applicants who still have to take the DSH-2 exam can request conditional admission onto a degree program. Anyone wishing to do so must provide proof of participation in German courses, where the exam is taken is at the post-intermediate level (C1). This conditional admission will only become effective if the DSH-2 certificate (or an equivalent certificate) is submitted by the enrolment date.
