Computer Science Higher National Certificate (Higher National Certificate Computing)
HNC Computer Science is a stepping stone towards a career in a specialist computing science subject. During this course, you will learn a diverse range of essential computing industries? skills from troubleshooting computer problems to software development and CISCO networking.
Discover dynamic skills as you develop your knowledge of IT and achieve your career ambitions. This unique course allows you to explore different disciplines in the computer science industry before deciding on a specialist subject in semester two. You can choose one of two specialist paths based on your experience and strengths. These two paths will lead to a career in either software development or computer networking and security. This is a hands-on and practical course that will enhance your employability skills. Each subject area you cover is tailored towards jobs available in the industry to make sure you get the best education to progress towards a specialist HND in computing science. All compatible Edinburgh College HND courses have third-year entry to Edinburgh Napier University or Heriot-Watt University. Alternatively, you can apply to a university upon completion of your HNC and gain entry to the first year of a university course.
Campus Information
Sighthill Campus
Our Sighthill campus is located in the West of Edinburgh. Sighthill celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2015 and has been continually improved over that time to provide a range of excellent facilities for students. As well as being an excellent centre for learning, the campus also boasts a centre for sport and exercise which, as well as providing an outstanding training facility for students, is available for staff and students to use. There's a range of clubs you can join, from running to rugby, or you can jump at the chance to form your own. There are a library and learning centre, which can be used in class groups or on your own and we offer additional support to those who need it. The Music Box is the college's state-of-the-art music centre. Acoustically tuned and kitted out to industry-standard specifications, the centre offers excellent practice, recording and performance facilities to musicians and performers, and is also available to hire for members of the public. Students and staff can relax between classes in the Atrium and enjoy a coffee, or grab some lunch in the refectory, where a range of hot and cold food and drinks are available.
