Graphic Design (National Certificate)

Graphic and Digital Design NC is designed to develop your creative potential using digital technology. Immerse yourself in the world of design using Edinburgh College school of art studios and Mac laboratories. Core skills will be learned in graphic design for print and web design through subjects such as Digital Imaging and Visual Communication. Here you will learn the use of industry-standard software.  

You will develop your strong creative ideas and an understanding of the design process and industry and learn skills in research and investigation through sketchbook work. Various works of art will be created by yourself in a range of graphic design subjects. Upon completion, you will be fully equipped and qualified to apply for further study of graphic and digital design at a higher level and progress in your creative journey towards a rewarding career in the creative industries.

Campus Information

Granton Campus

Based in the North of Edinburgh, our Granton Campus is a modern, practical, accessible building, packed with state of the art facilities. Our ‘Learning Street’ corridors have study spaces and computers as well as an on-site library and resource centre so that our students always have plenty of places to work in groups or individually. The teaching spaces are equipped with data projectors and interactive whiteboards, bringing the most up-to-date technology into the classroom. The campus has fully equipped sports halls, as well as specially equipped spacious art studios, complete with the latest tools and materials to produce a wide range of creative work. Included in our range of excellent learning facilities at Granton Campus is Edinburgh College's Construction Centre for Excellence, based at the Forthside building on West Shore Road. We offer a wide range of modern and traditional construction courses – from glazing, carpentry and stone masonry to conservation and heritage construction skills. Granton also plays host to PASS - one of Scotland’s largest training providers in the performing arts, where many young actors, including Karen Gillan, have studied. The main student social area is known as the ‘Hub’ and is surrounded by a range of college facilities, including student services, the student union and one of our Hair and Beauty Training Salons. There are several places to eat too – as well as the College’s own training restaurant, The Apprentice.?

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

  • Four National 5s or UAL Level 2 or equivalent  
  • Successful portfolio submission  
  • A good general understanding of the creative process from either school college or previous study and experience 
  • You must submit a portfolio that demonstrates your advanced art and design skills and an understanding of the creative process
