Theology, Ecology and Ethics MA
This MA is designed for students who are concerned about the current environmental challenges faced by our planet and the contribution that religious faith and theology can make within interdisciplinary approach to these challenges.
Co-created with the Jesuits in Britain, Roehampton offers a degree that fully immerses you in the subject. Taught by a team of scholars contributing to this debate out of their various specialisms, you will also benefit from guest lecturers from specialist research institutes and other organisations who will bring with them a wealth of experience and the opportunity for you to make contacts and build networks. This degree is taught entirely in central London, and part-time students have the option to only take evening classes, allowing you to fit studies around other commitments.
The course will provide you with the opportunity to explore the diverse methodologies employed in the fields of biblical studies, eco-theology, theological ethics and philosophy as they engage with today’s environmental challenges. Tackling our varied human responses to the growing environmental crisis, this degree will enable you to work in a theology-led but necessarily interdisciplinary approach.
You will gain critical, analytical and research skills that will enable you to develop and interpret new knowledge in the broad field of ecological theology. The programme is rooted in both the Western philosophical and Eastern and Western Christian traditions, but it is mindful of the contributions of other world faiths and indigenous belief systems, including First Peoples, Amerindians, and Aboriginal.
You will take a compulsory placement module as part of the course, where you will develop your reflective practice first hand. The placement will be in a faith-based or secular organisation that engages with ecological and environmental issues. You also have the option of using your current place of work, if it is in a relevant field, as your placement.
The Jesuits in Britain, as part of their support of this University of Roehampton degree are offering a number of scholarships and bursaries to suitable candidates.
