New Zealand Diploma in Applied Science (Level 6)
Students in this programme will learn theoretical and technical knowledge in a specialised field of science such as:
Food technology is about the science of food. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as food technologists who develop new food products, analyse the components of food, or; food safety officers who audit the food manufacturing industry.
Environmental technology is about the science of conservation, biosecurity and environmental management. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as biosecurity officers who help manage pest animal and plant control, and help conserve local environments.
Biotechnology is about the 'doing' of science, this includes quality assurance of laboratory practices, the analysis of samples and reporting on sample results. People who choose this pathway can work in entry level positions as researchers or laboratory technicians.
This programme is highly practical. Alongside learning theory, students will spend time in the laboratory developing the essential practical skills that are useful in the workplace.
It is intended that students will complete Applied Science 5 before proceeding to this programme. After completing this programme students can progress into relevant employment, or into further study with the Bachelor of Technology.
The classes for this programme are usually four days a week, with an average of five hours per day in class/labs. Students will also be required to undertake self-directed study in their own time. Part-time study is available for this programme, however, there are a high number of laboratory hours required.

Job Opportunity Potential
Graduates may be employed in technical positions in a specialised field of science in manufacturing and regulatory industries, field work, research and development, or continue onto higher levels of study. Many of our graduates work in laboratories after completing this programme.
PSW Opportunity
Level 7 (Bachelor’s degree)
- Duration: Equal to length of study (typically up to 3 years)
- Requirement: minimum 30 weeks full time study in NZ
Level 7 (Graduate Diploma)
Eligible for PSWV
Conditions:
- Must also hold a Bachelor’s degree (NZ or overseas)
- Duration: Up to length of study (typically 1 year)
Level 8 (Postgraduate Diploma)
- Duration: Equal to length of study, OR
- Up to 3 years in some cases (if part of higher qualification pathway)
Level 9 and 10 (Master’s degree and Doctoral degree)
- Duration: 3 years
- Condition: Must study at least 30 weeks in New Zealand
- Most eligible international students can work up to 25 hours per week during study and full-time during scheduled breaks, only if their student visa includes work rights.
- Foundation, pathway and short courses have different rules.
- Not allowed for part time students.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Level 6 Admission Requirement:
Completed Year 12 or equivalent.
Based on study completed after school (tertiary study)
- Completed the New Zealand Diploma (Level 5);
- Or a recognised equivalent.
Level 7 Admission Requirement:
Candidates are required to:
i) have successfully completed a bachelor degree from a New Zealand Institution or an approved and accredited overseas institution; or
ii) Successfully completed a Level 6 or 7 Diploma and relevant work and/or life experience (equivalent to a bachelor degree); or
iii) Evidence of equivalent practical, professional or educational experience as approved by the Centre Director or authorised nominee.
Concurrent programmes:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes level 4 and below:
IELTS 5.5 with a minimum of 5.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes levels 5 to 7:
IELTS 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in all bands, or equivalent
Programmes level 8 and above:
IELTS 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in all bands, or equivalent
Additional requirements:
2 year validity period for all assessments. External bodies may influence some programme specific IELTS levels. You must provide evidence of your proficiency in the English language.
