Diploma in Horticulture
The Diploma in Horticulture is a designed to introduce students to a broad range of topics associated with horticultural technology, production and management. Students also have the opportunity to develop applied computing and problem solving skills.
The Diploma study programme is prescribed (ie all courses are compulsory) and comprises of eight courses covering computing, propagation, horticultural management system, soils, plants studies and engineering.
The Diploma is also offered off-campus for part-time study but only at two sites: Nelson and Tauranga. To find out more about off-campus delivery, please view the Regional Diploma information on our website.
Practical Work
A period of Practical Work is a requirement of this qualification and full details are available in the handbook.

PSW Opportunity
- During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
- After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
- After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
One of the following:
• NCEA Level 2, a minimum of 40 credits over four subjects recognised by Lincoln University as suitable for entry (see the 'attachments' box further down for more information) to this diploma. The literacy and numeracy requirements for university entrance are also required. The list of subjects is reviewed periodically and applicants who have taken subjects other than those listed will be considered on a case-by-case basis. A maximum of 24 credits in any one subject will be counted towards the total.
• A New Zealand Certificate in Horticulture at Level 4 or higher obtained through an approved polytechnic institution.
