Masters in Research (MRes) Geography and Environmental Management

Offered under the umbrella title of MRes Geography and Environmental Management, this multidisciplinary course allows students to specialize in one of several areas that address pressing social and environmental issues.

The pathways on offer within the course are relevant to a range of professions across the industry, the public sector and the third sector. Depending on your chosen subject area, you will graduate with one of the following qualifications:

The course is suitable for students who have enjoyed the research components of their undergraduate degree and wish to prepare for a research-based career. Real-world research skills

This Master's degree will equip you with the skills necessary to undertake sustained, independent and innovative research. You will gain the confidence to work in creative and flexible and ways, and develop the ability to plan, produce and present rigorous, independent and theoretically informed studies. It also fosters the development of essential professional skills to enhance your employability, such as self-management, teamwork, problem solving and communication.

The taught components of the course provide a balance between training in interdisciplinary research methods and subject-specific research under the supervision of UWE Bristol's active research specialists. Alongside these, you will put your skills into practice by conducting a supervised independent extended research project.

Within the taught modules, there will be a seminar program delivered by academics and practitioners from inside and outside UWE Bristol. You will be expected to present on your own research, using skills learned in the taught modules and gaining valuable communication experience in the process.

For the final extended research project, you can choose to engage with ongoing research from one of UWE Bristol's specialist research groups or to embark on a new project relating to or inspired by your particular interests. In either case, this may relate to your current or future employment.

Flexible learning options

This master is available as a full time or part-time course with a high degree of flexibility. The taught modules are delivered on one day a week, making it suitable for day release study.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Entry requirements for postgraduate courses vary from institution to institution and have been determined by both the length of the degree and the section of university (as defined by the NOOSR list):

  • NOOSR Section 1 – 48% for a three–four year degree, 45% from a five-year degree.

    • Section 1 includes: Alagappa University, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Amity, Amrita Institute of Management, Anna university, Banaras hindu University, Bangalore University, Bharathiar University, Birla Institute of Technology, Board of Technical Education, Chennai University, D Y Patil, Delhi University, English and Foreign Language University, Guru Nanak Dev University, IIM, IIT, IIS, Kolkata University, Mumbai University, Pune University.

    • These are the most common universities, but please see NOOSR for complete list.

  • NOOSR Section 2 – 55% for all degrees

  • Section 3 – 60% for all degrees.

  • The government agenda is to introduce the GPA system by 2020, but some institutions have already done so. In the event of an institution adopting the GPA system, then the following GPAs will apply:

    • Section 1 – 2.6 GPA

    • Section 2 – 2.8 GPA

    • Section 3 – 3.0 GPA.

Please note: Where UWE Bristol has an academic agreement in place with an institution, greater flexibility in entry requirements for undergraduate and postgraduate courses may apply as outlined in those agreements.

English language requirements

To study at UWE Bristol you must demonstrate that your English level is high enough for university study. We accept a number of different Secure English Language Tests (SELT) for entry onto our degree courses, with IELTS being the most common. English language requirements vary slightly from subject to subject.

We also accept the following local qualification (please note this may vary for some courses):

  • Higher Secondary School Certificate/Indian School Certificate – Standard XII from CBSE/CISCE/WBCHSEB: English Language – 70%
