Accounting BA (Hons)

To become a chartered accountant, you’ll need to satisfy the requirements of professional accounting bodies. Our Accounting course is designed specifically with their requirements in mind, in order to maximise the number of exemptions from their exams. Currently the course has 42 individual exemptions across six of the world’s largest professional bodies. The exemptions mean you’ll be able to enter the job market having already undertaken a significant portion of your professional qualification.

Job Opportunity Potential

We encourage you to undertake an optional year-long placement between your second and final years. This will allow you to put your knowledge into practice and gain industry experience. Depending on the nature of the placement, it may count as the practice element that’s needed for full membership of the Association of Accounting Technicians, and you’ll be able to use the letters MAAT after your name. It’s also possible to spend the optional year in another country, studying at a university with links to Northumbria. This will extend your international experience and help prepare you for a career in the multicultural world of finance.

The course includes modules that explicitly address the knowledge and skills you’ll need for personal and career development. You’ll explore your personality, values, abilities and interests as part of making a well-informed career choice and developing a career plan. In addition our Careers and Employment Service will offer a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

Many of our graduates move into one of the big four accounting firms or into a role in industry accounting, taking up training contracts and completing professional qualifications.

As an accountant you’ll undertake financial audits, manage financial systems and budgets, and provide professional advice. As you progress in your career, you may move into wider leadership roles. One in six of the UK’s top 100 chief executives started out with a finance or accounting degree.

You can also undertake further study at postgraduate level with a course such as our Forensic Accounting MSc. If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have strong employability as a result of having acquired the characteristics of a Northumbria graduate. These include critical reflection and self-learning, collaboration and curiosity, and the ability to apply your knowledge to solve problems in ways that are sustainable and ethical.
