Master of Science in Textile Science
NMMU has the only facility in South Africa for postgraduate studies in textile and clothing science, offering students the opportunity to obtain, by research, the degrees of MSc (Textiles) and PhD. The Fibre and Textile competence area of the Materials Science and Manufacturing Operating Unit of the CSIR, situated virtually adjacent to the NMMU North and South campuses, has acted as the post-graduate Department of Textile Science, making its modern equipment and highly qualified and experienced staff available for this purpose.
One of the following fields may be selected for research:
Textile Chemistry (protein, cotton, man-made fibre chemistry, detergency, dyeing, finishing);
Textile Physics (Physics of fibres, yams or fabrics);
Textile Statistics;
Mechanical Processing (carding, combining, spinning, knitting, weaving, etc.);
Textile Engineering (machine manufacture).

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
The medium of instruction and examination at the NMMU is English.
Applicants from non-English speaking countries are required to submit proof of English proficiency before registration. The TOEFL or IELTS tests, available in most countries, are acceptable proof.
IELTS – 6.5 overall score with a minimum of 6 in each section.
TOEFL: PBT – 580 overall with minimums of 53 in listening, 52 in reading and 59 in structure/written
CBT – 237 overall with minimums of 19 in listening, 19 in reading and 25 in structure/written
IBT – 90 overall with minimums of 18 in listening, 17 in reading 22 in writing and 19 in speaking
