PhD Microbiology
Microbiology has an impact on multiple aspects of our lives, ensuring our food is safe, treating and preventing disease, developing green technologies, or tracking the role of microbes in climate change, among other applications.
Our MPhil/PhD is designed to enable students to develop their research skills by focusing on a specialist set of research questions. We aim to equip graduates to embark on further research to strive to solve major global challenges such as antibiotic resistance, clean drinking water, and food security.
Staff can offer expertise in medical, industrial and environmental microbiology, molecular, cell and system biology, recombinant DNA technology, protein biochemistry, structural biology, fermentation, and bioengineering.
Students can benefit from training courses provided by the University to develop key skills in research. Under the guidance and advice of their PhD supervisors, students will be encouraged to present talks and seminars on their work both at the University of Lincoln as well at national and international meetings and conferences. Under the guidance of your PhD supervisors students will also be expected to produce progress reports, develop their ability to write up work for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and ultimately to effectively communicate their research and thesis.
Beyond learning how to conduct research and the specialist skills that students are expected to develop within their subject discipline (e.g. how to work in a molecular laboratory or conduct animal cognition experiments), the process of studying for a research degree can provide transferable skills in problem-solving, time management, independent and team work, and communication.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the University is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. The UK Visas and Immigration, part of the Home Office, requires employers to complete this test to show that no suitably qualified EEA or EU worker can fill the post.
