Zoology with Placement Year M.Biol.Sci
Course description
This five-year MBiolSci with Placement Year allows you to do a year-long, paid work placement between your second and third year. A year of specialist research training completes this advanced course.
You'll pay reduced fees for the year you're on placement. You'll also have regular contact with your tutor and all the support you need from the University. We have a dedicated tutor to help you find a placement, and our Careers Service is on hand to offer support and advice.
The course explores areas such as population and community ecology, animal conservation and biodiversity, molecular ecology, evolution and behaviour. We have been at the forefront of important recent developments in the study of natural selection and the outcome of evolution at the individual and population levels.
You'll develop skills that are central to scientific investigation, including observation, testing of ideas, analysis and critical interpretation. With level three project work you'll apply these skills to your own research.
In the first and second years, you can choose modules run by our other two biology departments, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology and Biomedical Sciences. You may need A Level Chemistry to take these modules.
Your MBiolSci involves an extensive, individual research project similar to that of a masters degree. You'll work one-to-one with a member of academic staff. The project will build on your in-depth knowledge and skills. It's excellent preparation for a research-related career or higher degree.
There are optional field courses in the UK, Ireland, Arctic Sweden, the Mediterranean, Tanzania, and tropical rainforest in Malaysian Borneo.
If you want to study zoology, but don't meet the entry requirements to go straight into the first year, our Biosciences with a Foundation Year could be for you. After successfully completing the one-year programme, you'll progress onto the first year of your chosen degree.
