Biomedical Science with a Year in Industry M.Bio.med.Sci
Course description
You'll study everything from the gene to whole body systems. We want you to graduate with a thorough understanding of the genetic and molecular processes that underpin the development, structure and function of the human body in health and disease.
The first two years give you a grounding in the molecular and cellular basis of life. You will have the opportunity to carry out human dissection, supervised by a member of staff.
In your third year you will have the opportunity to go on out on work placement. These placements range from research and laboratory based positions through to clinical development, regulatory affairs and marketing. Each year, our students work for global pharmaceutical companies including Eli Lilly, Pfizer and GlaxoSmithKline in roles like Translational Neuroscientist and Associate Clinical Data Scientist, or for FMCG organisations like Jacobs Douwe Egberts developing new coffee flavours.
In the fourth year, we expect you to be more independent. You'll have the opportunity to specialise in areas that interest you, for example medical sciences, molecular physiology, neuroscience, developmental biology and pharmacology. We ask for more critical thinking from you at this level and a better understanding of existing research. You will also complete a research project of your own. If you haven't been on work placement then there is another opportunity to do so at the end of the fourth year.
The fifth year focuses on developing your research skills. You'll work on an extended project in a research laboratory. You'll also explore areas such as ethics, the law and the public understanding of science.
If you want to study biomedical science, but don't meet the entry requirements to go straight into the first year, our Biosciences with a Foundation Year could be for you. After successfully completing the one-year programme, you'll progress onto the first year of your chosen degree.
