Higher Diploma in Science in Computing

The Higher Diploma in Science in Computing is a Level 8 course. The course will teach you the computing fundamentals, complemented with detailed knowledge, problem-solving and specialised technical skills required for designing, developing and deploying software.

The course offers a specialisation in Software Development in the second semester.

Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to progress to a Master’s programme (Level 9) in a specialised area of computing such as MSc in Data Analytics, MSc in Cybersecurity, MSc in Cloud Computing, MSc in Fintech, MSc in Artificial Intelligence and MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Business.

Note that a minimum of three years relevant work experience in industry is required to be eligible for the MSc in Artificial Intelligence for Business.

Job Opportunity Potential

Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible to progress to a Master’s programme (Level 9) in a specialised area of computing such as MSc in Data Analytics, MSc in Cybersecurity, MSc in Cloud Computing and MSc in Fintech.

Graduates may also avail of entry-level tech related positions, depending on the selected stream, such as mobile application designer/developer; cloud application developer; cloud solutions architect; software developer; system and network administrator; IT infrastructure implementation, installation, support and helpdesk specialist; IoT software developer; entry-level cybersecurity engineer; cybersecurity tester; computer forensics examiner; software tester; quality assurance software tester; and test architect

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Applicants will normally have an equivalent to an Irish Level 8 Honours in any discipline will be considered.

  • HSC XII (all State boards): Overall average of 70% or above Year 1 of Bachelors degrees 
  • A recognised International Foundation course from an Irish/UK institution or an Indian institution following a validated Irish/UK syllabus. Entry requirements vary but we normally ask for between 60% and 65% Year 1 of Bachelors degrees  
  • Irish/UK Higher National Diploma (HND) with Distinctions and Merits  Possibly year 2 of Bachelors degrees
