Bachelor of Arts (English and Media Studies)

Course Overview
With platform convergence, and a dissolving of the walls between information and entertainment media, Media Studies is an increasingly popular programme internationally as well as domestically. The Discipline of English has a tradition of giving critical attention to cultural creation in broad, inclusive contexts. This programme builds on that experience, and on ongoing student demand, to provide a programme, grounded in the humanities, that prepares students for engagement with our multi-platform media environment.

The primary focus of the programme is the theoretical study of media in critical and historical perspective. A core aim of this programme is to equip students with transferable communications and critical thinking skills that will equip them for future success in the labour market.

Students will have opportunities to explore both Media Studies and traditional English literature offerings. Based on current Teaching Council requirements, students in this denominated BA programme would meet the requirements to teach English at post-primary level.

Students will also develop research skills that afford them an appropriate grounding for further educational opportunities nationally or internationally. Several MA programmes provide pathways for graduates of this Denominated BA to proceed into further education at postgraduate levels at NUI Galway.
