Modern Languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Spanish), BA (Hons)
A three or four-year programme, depending on whether students choose to spend a year studying abroad. Students will study two languages at the same time with the possibility of a third language later on. This course will develop formal and informal language and communication skills and will introduce students to translation and interpreting techniques. Our students also debate a range of topics, including history (current and past), politics, social and cultural issues, film and music, literature and area studies. The course will develop many other transferrable skills, such as time management and organisation; cultural understanding; working both independently and as part of a team.
There will also be ample opportunities for students from the different languages represented on our various programmes to meet both academically and socially. This means that, whatever their particular course of study, students will quickly feel part of a wider group of Modern Foreign Language students in the School.
All of our Modern Foreign Language courses emphasise the communicative properties of languages, and provide opportunities to develop knowledge of ‘area studies’ associated with target languages. Each programme is very versatile and can lead to a broad range of exciting careers. Assessment varies from presentations to essays to written, oral and aural exams. Students will be taught in small groups enabling good interaction with the lecturers and other students. Furthermore, tutorials are given once weekly by language assistants.
