Welcome to the MA in Publishing at UCLan. In 2020, we celebrate TEN YEARS of awarding degrees at postgraduate level!

For the past ten years, we have worked closely with top professionals in the publishing world to create a unique curriculum which provides you with an excellent academic qualification and the vocational and practical skills vital for you to pursue a successful career in Publishing.

Our team of lecturers and tutors are dedicated academics and experienced practitioners in the book industries. Our programme has been designed in consultation with leading publishing houses such as Canongate, Faber & Faber, Harpercollins and Penguin, academic publishing houses, such as Liverpool University Press and Manchester University Press, as well as specialist houses, such as Carcanet and Comma Press.

Many of our graduates over the past ten years now work in the publishing world, and our Alumni network is a vital contacts system for current students. We have alumni contacts  in  Macmillan, Palgrave, Penguin, Manchester University Press, BBC (children’s department), Ishara Press, Oxford University Press, Nielsen Bookscan, Oxfam (in Kenya) and Waterstone’s, working in roles as diverse as editors, project managers, bibliographic editors, production coordinators and picture researchers, many in senior positions and willing to offer work placements and opportunities to current students.

Preston

There are a variety of different ways you can access our Preston city campus, whether by rail, road or air. Preston is well served by the M6 motorway both north and south and excellent cross country rail links. There are also two major international airports in Manchester and Liverpool John Lennon.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

55% in bachelor degree

70% in Year 12 English*
Or
70% average grade in Year 11 and Year 12 English provided Year 12 is not below 65%
Or
Standard English language entry requirements – IELTS 6.5 or equivalent

GCSE or O-Level English Grade C - Grade C

A Level English Language - Grade C

TOEFL iBT including Special At Home Edition - 88 (with minimum grades of 21 in each component)

UCLan Test of English Language Level (TELL) - Merit (75%) with no component below pass (65%)

Pearson Test of EnglishAcademic - 61 with minimum of 55 in each component

We normally require a good honours degree or equivalent. However, we will take into account previous experience in the workplace. Informal enquiries are welcome and may be followed by an initial advisory interview (which can be conducted by phone). If your first language is not English, you will be required to have an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher, or equivalent. Such equivalence may be shown by taking UCLan's own test of English proficiency.
