Master of Science (Geography)

Massey’s Master of Sciences (Geography) will give you the knowledge and skills to understand and help solve some of the world’s most important environmental issues like flooding, coastal erosion, sea level change, landslide hazards and environmental change.

Massey’s geography lecturers have an extensive range of experience and expertise. The ratio of staff to students is high. Your lecturers will be your mentors, working closely alongside you to prepare you for a career or research at a higher level.

Broad range of equipment and facilities
You will have access to a wide range of techniques and equipment, making it easier to progress your research in a timely and comprehensive fashion. Field equipment includes industry-standard ground survey gear - the latest R10 Trimble RTK differential GPS units and an S6 robotic total station, UAVs,a shielded ground penetrating radar, and Schmidt hammers for relative age dating of boulders.

Other equipment includes:

  • fully equipped palynology laboratory
  • SEM, TEM and Confocal microscopes (via the Manawatu Microscopy and Imaging Centre)
  • classifynder automated microscope system prototype 
  • laser particle size analyser
  • Sontek M9 river surveyor (ADCP flow meter)
  • several electromagnetic flow meters
  • Chirp Sub-bottom sonar.

During the course of your studies you can choose to further your knowledge and apply your learning on exciting research projects like:

  • monitoring active landslides in glaciated valleys
  • age estimation of ancient glaciated rockslides
  • refining understanding of marine terrace development
  • reconstructing the evolution of estuaries and coastal environments
  • statistical analyses of earthquake-induced landslides
  • pollen-based vegetation and climate reconstructions
  • applications of automated palynology systems
  • mapping river channel and floodplain geomorphology
  • flood series extension
  • gully development and stream connectivity

Campus Information

Manawatu campus

The Manawatu campus is Massey's original campus. With lovely heritage buildings and park-like grounds located near Palmerston North city, it is one of the best places in the country to experience the real student lifestyle. With a huge portion of the population under 25 it is the perfect place for learning and living. The large campus is beautiful year-round with 11,500 different varieties of plants and trees in the form of manicured gardens, green fields, woodlands and bush.

PSW Opportunity

  • During study, all students on a student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during semester and full time during vacations.
  • After completing Level 7 Bachelor’s Degree or Higher Qualification, a student will get a three years open post-study work visa.
  • After completing Level 8 Post Graduate courses of 1 year, students get 1 year PSW.
