Ph.D - Social Sciences

The School of Social Sciences supports a growing and vibrant community of Ph.D. students. The Ph.D. is an advanced postgraduate qualification, involving three or more years in which you work through the issues associated with solving a particular problem. Each research student is supported by a team of supervisors appointed for a particular study. 

The School welcomes inquiries relating to the fields of psychology, criminology, and sociology. 

What's covered in the course?
In the School of Social Sciences, the staff has recognized standing, nationally and internationally, in the following broad areas:

  • understanding crime and punishment;
  • the study of all aspects of psychology;
  • the exploration of social structures and change.

Our Ph.D. students benefit from regular supervision meetings with academics who are experts in their field. They have the opportunity to become members of our proactive research community made up of academics, postgraduate researchers and external partners.

Our state-of-the-art resources include a gallery, noise and vibration cells, video production laboratory, a robotic laboratory, a huge isolation booth with sonic sound quality big enough to record drum kits, fantastic recording facilities, and a blue screen studio for chromakey work for film and music.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To apply for our PhD research degree you should have, or expect to be awarded, a Masters degree in a relevant subject area from a British or overseas university.

Exceptional candidates without a Masters degree, but holding a first class Bachelors degree in a relevant subject area, may be considered.

We also welcome enquiries from potential PhD researchers without formal academic qualifications but with appropriate levels of professional experience.

If you intend to take a practice-led research approach to your PhD study, then you will expected to show your portfolio as part of the application process, normally at the formal interview stage.

English Language Requirements for International Students
Valid Academic IELTS certificate with overall score of 7.0 with no band below 6.5 or equivalent.
