Master of Nursing

The Master in Nursing (MN) program is a course-based degree program and has three specialization/field options.

1) Advanced Clinical Practice Nursing Field
In the Advanced Clinical Nursing field, students will explore the human experience of health, well-being, illness and healing within the context of individuals, families, groups and communities. Selected concepts such as health promotion, illness prevention, stress appraisal, and coping resources will be examined through critical appraisal of the literature in nursing and related disciplines. Students will have the opportunity to develop evidence-based knowledge and skills required to manage the complex health needs of Canada’s multicultural population through health promotion and illness prevention or adaptation to illness and injury.

2) Nursing Leadership Field
In the Nursing Leadership field, students will explore concepts of contemporary nursing leadership in management, research and education. Students will critically appraise and synthesize a variety of educational, environmental, and political issues that influence the Canadian health care system. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills necessary to impact policy and decision-making relevant to the profession of nursing, in particular, and the health care system in general.

3) Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner (NP) Field
In the primary health care nurse practitioner field, students will be prepared to provide collaborative and autonomous primary health care to individuals, groups or communities, with an emphasis on health promotion as well as illness/injury prevention. Students will develop advanced assessment, diagnostic and clinical reasoning skills in preparation for ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, communicating diagnoses, prescribing pharmaceuticals, and performing other specific controlled procedures.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Graduates of recognized universities may be admitted to programs leading to the Master's degree. A student with a four-year degree or equivalent in the discipline to which s/he is seeking admission, and who has an academic standing equivalent to 70% or better in the final two years of study (full-time equivalent) may be admitted to a Master's program (M2).

An applicant who holds a four-year degree in a related discipline, and who has an academic standing equivalent to 70% or better overall and in the final year of study and the major subject, may also be admitted to a Master's program as a transitional student. Transitional students are normally required to complete a program of no more than five specified undergraduate courses in addition to the graduate courses required of regular students. Upon completion of these extra courses, with a minimum grade as specified by the program, the student may continue in the Master's program as a regular student (M2).

An applicant who does not meet minimum departmental program admission requirements, but who can present evidence of leadership, and/or substantial related work experience, may be considered for probationary admission upon the recommendation of the program. Students who are accepted on probation will be required to satisfactorily complete two specified graduate courses in the first term of registration, in addition to any other admission requirements, before conditions are waived. Graduate credit will be given for the graduate courses after the conditions are waived. The final decision on probationary admission rests with the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
