Bachelor of Arts, English (Honours)
English Literature courses cover literature from the medieval period to the present and provide instruction in theoretical approaches and critical methods. The program not only introduces students to an array of literary genres but also develops their creative and interpretive capabilities. The aim is to provide comprehensive historical coverage, to expand students' writing skills, and to promote the kind of analysis and argumentation that enables them to express their ideas clearly and effectively. The program also offers courses in Creative Writing.
What is unique about this program at the U of M?
English literature at the University of Manitoba is part of a vibrant interdisciplinary unit, the Department of English, Film, and Theatre, where students have the opportunity to pursue both creative and critical work in literature, film, and theatre, including creative writing, performance, and film or stage production. Many Film and Theatre courses are cross-listed with English and can be taken for credit in the literature program. The faculty members, many of whom have won national and international awards, teach and research in such areas as American, British, Canadian, and Postcolonial Literatures, direct and act in plays and films, and write and publish novels, screenplays, and poems. Students also have access to the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture and the programs and events available there.
