Diploma of Maritime Operations - Watchkeeper Deck

If you want to become a Deck Watchkeeper, then MAR50315 Diploma of Maritime Operations - Watchkeeper Deck is the course to give you the skills and knowledge you need to meet the academic requirements for Deck Watchkeeper certification as described in Marine Orders - Part 3 - Seagoing Qualifications (Version 6) under the Australian Navigation Act 1912. This course will also cover marine safety, communications, ship knowledge, seamanship, cargo, and bridge operations.

In order to be eligible for the AMSA Watchkeeper Deck Certificate of Competency, you should have 18-36 months qualifying sea services on appropriate ships as a Deck Cadet or equivalent in an approved program. This is required to be assessed by AMSA.

Below are the requirements for entry into this course. You must have the following to be considered:

  • completed a pre-sea course and an AMSA approved and monitored onboard training program for trainee Deck Officers including at least 24 months documented qualifying seagoing service on vessels at least 500 GT OR
  • completed at least 36 months documented qualifying seagoing service on vessels at least 24 meters AND served the qualifying seagoing service mentioned above (1) and (2) WITH AT LEAST 12 months on vessels on voyages of at least 24 hours duration AND at least 6 of the 12 months mentioned as a documented understudy of the officer in charge of a navigation watch on a vessel

Based on any certificates or qualifications that you may already hold, you MAY be required to undertake additional short course qualifications as specified by AMSA. This is an AMSA requirement for certification for all seafarers. The fees may be up to $9,996 depending on your training.
